Police are warning Ottawa residents of organized crime tourism crews they say are operating across the country. In a news release, Ottawa police said they have confirmed the presence of “South American Theft Groups,” crews who legally enter the country to “commit coordinated residential and retail break-ins.” Investigations in Ottawa, the Greater Toronto Area, Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary have tied high-value break-ins to these international crime groups, police say. Police say these groups target cash, as well as jewelry, high-value watches, designer goods and small safes, which they then send abroad to resell. According to police, homes along greenbelts and parks, as well as unoccupied houses, are commonly targeted, and thieves gain entry through rear and second-storey windows, as well as glass doors. The Ottawa police suggest the following prevention tips: Police say arrests have been made in connection to these crimes but have not specified how many.
