Ottawa police are reminding drivers to lock their doors and remove valuables from cars as they report a 35 per cent increase in thefts from vehicles since July. In a news release, police say 1,140 incidents have been reported between July 1 and Sept. 30 this year, compared to 844 during the same period last year. It comes as overall vehicle thefts have decreased, police say. “Many of the incidents reported involve suspects checking door handles and entering vehicles that have been left unlocked,” police said Tuesday. Common items stolen include wallets, credit cards, cash, sunglasses, tools and other valuables left inside vehicles. Some of the thefts involved garage door openers being stolen that were later used to gain access to homes. “These crimes are often preventable,” said Ottawa Police Service West District Isp. Ian Hayes. “Taking a few seconds to lock your vehicle and remove valuables can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim. We are asking residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods.” Ottawa police are encouraging residents to: Residents who observe suspicious activity should call the Ottawa Police Service at 613- 236-1222. If you witness a crime is in progress, call 911. Anonymous tips can be provided to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or by submitting a tip online.
