The Ottawa Police Service is reporting a 27 per cent drop in hate or bias motivated crimes in Ottawa so far this year. New statistics show 187 incidents of hate or bias motivated crime have been reported to Ottawa police through the first nine months of the year, down from 250 incidents between Jan. 1 and Sept. 21, 2025. “83 per cent of hate-motivated incidents were criminal offences,” police said. “Mischief to property was the most common violation, accounting for 59 incidents.” The Ottawa Police Service’s safety snapshot shows there have been 10 reports of mischief to cultural or religious property in Ottawa this yar, up from three incidents in 2025. Police have also reported 24 assaults and 15 incidents of uttering threats this year. According to police, there have been 38 incidents targeting Black people, 27 incidents against Jewish people and 21 incidents against LGBTQ2+ people. Police are asking anyone who experienced a hate-motivated incident to file a report by calling 613-236-1222 or online at http://ottawapolice.ca. The Ottawa Police Service reported a 23 per cent drop in hate crime incidents in 2025. There were 358 incidents reported to the Hate and Bias Crime Unit in 2025, down from 467 incidents in 2024. Crime up in Ottawa There has been an 11 per cent increase in crime in Ottawa this year, including a five per cent jump in violent crimes and a four per cent increase in property crimes. The Ottawa Police Service says there have been 41,280 crimes reported in the first nine months of the year, up from 37,110 crimes reported between Jan. 1 and Sept. 21, 2025.
