Ottawa police investigating fatal collision after pedestrian hit by truck on Smyth Road

A woman in her 50s is dead after she was struck by a dump truck in Elmvale Acres Wednesday morning. CTV’s Austin Lee reports.

The Ottawa Police Service is investigating a fatal collision in the Elmvale area.

Ottawa paramedics say they were called at around 10:05 a.m. to the area of Smyth Road near Russell Road, where a pedestrian was hit by a truck.

The pedestrian, identified as a woman in her 50s, died from her injuries.

Investigators were seen in the area working to piece together what happened.

“They’re going to take their time just walking the scene. I know they’re going to look at drone footage, things like that, taking measurements and collect evidence from the rest of the public,” said Ottawa police duty inspector Cory Robertson in an interview with CTV News.

“Any time there’s a death, we take it very seriously.”

Gabriel Obando, owner of nearby OB&O Afro-Caribbean Restaurant, says he was shocked to come across the scene when he came in to work Wednesday afternoon.

“This is very saddening. Any death is saddening and to happen in such a, shall I say, violent way, it’s very sad,” he said.

“This place has never been cordoned off like this. Whatever needs to be done by the police to get this work done, I think that is most welcome. My condolences to the family.”

Ottawa police say Smyth Road was closed between Russell Road and Othello Avenue for several hours. The road has since reopened.

Investigators would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dashcam footage of this incident, but has not yet spoken to police.
