Ottawa police help deliver baby on the side of highway

A brand new Ottawan was welcomed to the world today, though not in the hospital.

Ottawa police say they helped a couple deliver their baby on the side of Highway 174 near the Montreal Road exit.

According to police, husband and wife Jeremie and Kaitlyn were on their way to the hospital with Kaitlyn in active labour. However, when the couple realized they wouldn’t make it to their destination in time, they pulled over to the side of the road.

Police say the husband, Jeremie managed to wave down a police cruiser that was passing by.

“I was flagged down by Dad on the 174 when he told me that his wife felt the baby’s head. I immediately escorted them off the highway and was told that the baby was out,” Cst. Nicolas of the Ottawa police said in a statement.

“It was a very unique and surreal moment I will remember for the rest of my career.”

The baby was delivered safely on the side of the highway, while officers helped keep the couples safe until paramedics arrived, Ottawa police say.

“Welcome to the world, Baby Jack!” Ottawa police wrote.

“Kaitlyn — you did an incredible job! Jack’s big sister can’t wait to meet him and welcome him home.”
