It’s been more than three weeks since Kevin Shaw’s adapted bike was stolen from his backyard. The 54-year-old is a quadriplegic living with cerebral palsy and uses the bike for exercise. Police say the three-wheel custom bike was stolen from Shaw’s Alta Vista area home between July 12 and July 14. Despite Shaw’s home security cameras capturing the suspect riding off with the bike, police have not caught the thief or retrieved the bike. “It’s not really about my condition. It’s about getting exercise, like any other person,” Shaw told CTV News in an interview Thursday. “(I’m) pretty frustrated,” he said. “It’s not easy to get a piece of adaptive equipment like that.” He says he usually keeps the bike in his backyard, locked up under a tarp. Shaw says he has had his bike for 23 years, getting it custom made to his specifications by company Freedom Concepts in Winnipeg at a cost of about $3,000. Shaw has filed an insurance claim for the custom bike and has been quoted a price of $6,600 for a new one. After insurance coverage, Shaw will still have to pay roughly $2000 out of pocket. He says the wait for a custom bike such as his can be as long as two months, which interrupts plans he had for riding it. “I was planning to do another army run with a buddy. We’ve done marathons, 10K’s, 5K’s, half-marathons.” In the latest update from Ottawa Police, Shaw was told they are still looking for the suspect. Along with retrieving the bike, Shaw wants to see the person who took it charged. Regardless of his condition, Shaw has a message for the thief who took his bike: “It’s not right to steal what people own.”
