A suspended driver allegedly tried to hide the fact he was behind the wheel by climbing into the backseat during a traffic stop in Barrie’s west end. Barrie police say officers were on patrol shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday, when they spotted a vehicle speeding along the shoulder of Dunlop Street West to get around slow traffic in an active construction zone. Officers stopped the vehicle on Hart Drive, but as it came to a stop, they reportedly watched the driver move into the backseat while the passenger climbed into the driver’s seat. Police later discovered the man originally behind the wheel had been driving with a suspended licence. The 23-year-old Barrie driver was arrested and charged with dangerous operation, obstructing police and driving while under suspension. The 22-year-old passenger was also arrested and charged with obstructing police. Officers are reminding everyone to be patient while travelling through construction zones and to avoid putting road workers and other drivers at risk in an attempt to squash time.
