Ottawa is changing the colour of parking tickets so you can see it on the windshield

The City of Ottawa is changing the colour of parking tickets so drivers can see them on the windshield, as part of a series of changes to parking tickets and the penalty system.

Starting July 28, Bylaw Services officers will issue yellow tickets instead of white tickets.

“The colour of the tickets will change from white to yellow, making it easier to see on your windshield,” the city said in a media release.

Drivers will also have an extra week to pay the early payment fine for a parking ticket.

The City of Ottawa currently offers an early payment penalty for parking infractions, giving drivers seven days to pay the fine at a cheaper rate, with the penalty updated to the “set fine” amount on the eighth day after the ticket was issued.

For example, the fine for parking in excess of the posted time limit is $70, with an early payment option of $50.

As of July 28, the early payment fine will increase from seven days to 15 days, with the set fee applying on the 16^th day after the ticket was issued. The first reminder notice will also be issued to registered owners.

The city says after 45 days, a late fee will apply to the ticket, and a second reminder notice will be issued.

“With these changes, the timeline before a ticket reaches default will increase from 61 days to 76 days after the ticket is issued,” the city said in a media release.

“At this default stage, the automatic renewal of your licence plate may be denied until all outstanding fees are paid.”

Drivers will also have up to 15 days after the ticket is issued to request a review by a screening officer.
