The Ottawa Sports Council kicked off Sports 200, two days of free sports and activities to get residents active this weekend. The activities are being held at more than 40 locations in Ottawa, including at city facilities and the RA Centre. The event is to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the City of Ottawa and for National Health and Fitness Day. Roommates Rachael Mohl and Abbie Craword wanted to try some new ways to get active. “We recently got a pickleball paddle, so I feel like it made us start thinking about sports in the summer,” said Crawford. Both signed up for yoga on Saturday and will be doing some kayaking on Sunday. “Just really cool that Ottawa does stuff like this. We really appreciate it. You’re a student and I’m kind of newer in the workforce, so not making a ton of money. It’s nice to have the opportunity to do something like this for free,” said Crawford. More than 1,200 people are participating, according to organizers. Some of the sports include rowing, sailing, volleyball, baseball, swimming, yoga, soccer, table tennis and squash. “We did this because we really believe in sport as a connector for community. Building strong people and bringing people together to celebrate through sport,” said Frances Mercer, executive director of the Ottawa Sports Council. Mother and daughter Malissa and Shanice Garcia are trying out soccer. Shanice said she used to play years ago and hopes this will boost her motivation to get back. “Been wanting to get back into soccer and picking up the skills again. I thought I’d give it a shot,” said Shanice. “It’s a new experience but getting used to it, learning new skills. Hopefully, I’ll continue on with it after this.” The event runs until Sunday.
