Ontario Provincial Police are offering a warning and tips about scams after a resident reported an email impersonating an officer. The Lanark area resident said the email contained an officer’s name and a photo of a badge and a warrant card and was asking for personal information. The resident, however, noticed the email was suspicious. “In this case the person recognized that the officer’s email was a Gmail account and not a legitimate police email,” the OPP said in a post on X on Thursday. “The OPP urges people to closely look for clues that the email is not legitimate… There is quite often spelling mistakes or other obvious clues.” Police say if you receive an unexpected email claiming to be from the OPP or any other police service, reach out to them directly. Do not use any of the contact information provided in the email, including phone numbers. The general phone number for the OPP is 1-888-310-1122.
