The 59 elected representatives of the Parti Québécois (PQ) are set to be sworn in on Thursday afternoon in the Red Room of the National Assembly. They are expected to take an oath of loyalty to the people of Quebec before officially accepting their posts. Since 2022, the oath to the King has no longer been compulsory. The ceremony, set to start at 2 p.m., is slated to take place in the Legislative Council Chamber, a first after two years of renovations. Lieutenant-Governor Manon Jeanotte, the representative of the King of England, was reportedly not invited to the ceremony, as the PQ has said it is keen to sever all ties with the monarchy. PQ Leader and Premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon is due to present his cabinet on Oct. 21. The swearing-ins for members of the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) are set to take place next Monday, with Québec Solidaire on Tuesday and the Conservatives (PCQ) on Thursday. On Oct. 5, the PQ was brought to power with 28 per cent of the vote, increasing its number from three MNAs in 2022 to 59. It is slated to form a minority government, with the PLQ as official opposition. This is the first time the PQ has been elected to power since 2012, when Pauline Marois led a minority government for 18 months.
