OPP seek witnesses to motor oil spill on Hwy. 417

Ontario Provincial Police are looking for witnesses after several bottles of motor oil were spilled onto Highway 417 near Bronson Avenue Wednesday morning.

Provincial Constable Michael Fathi said on social media that there were significant delays in the westbound lanes near Bronson because of the spill, which happened at around 10:15 a.m. Several lanes of traffic were closed to allow road crews to clean up the spill.

“There’s been a few bottles of oil that have been spilled across two lanes and that’s making it very dangerous for traffic to drive through there,” he said in a Facebook video.

In an update, Fathi said camera footage from the Ministry of Transportation showed what appeared to be an SUV with an open trunk pulled over in the same area at that time.

Fathi said anyone who might have seen the vehicle from which the containers spilled should contact the Ottawa detachment of the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Workers were seen putting absorbent on the roadway at around 12:40 p.m. and lanes reopened at around 1:30 p.m.
