The Ottawa Police Service says a novice driver was arrested after allegedly going more than double the speed limit in Orléans Thursday night. The arrest was made during a traffic enforcement blitz targeting aggressive driving, excessive speeding and nuisance driving following ongoing concerns from residents. According to police, an 18-year-old driver with a G2 licence was stopped at Tenth Line Road and Amiens Street after allegedly going 127 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. The driver was charged with stunt driving, speeding and failing to surrender an insurance card. Their licence was suspended for 30 days, and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days. A 50-year-old driver was charged with driving while suspended after an automatic licence plate reader flagged that the driver had unpaid fees. Police said several other drivers were charged with offences included speeding, unnecessary noise, using a hand-held communication device while driving, and various vehicle documentation and equipment violations. In total, 31 charges were laid, police said. Police also attended a car meet at the Fallingbrook Mall on Tenth Line Road, with more than 20 drivers attending. The gatherings had, in the past, prompted resident complaints about dangerous driving. Police said no incidents were reported on Thursday.
