Motorists travelling between Ottawa and Gatineau are being warned to expect delays on the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge over the next four months. Public Services and Procurement Canada says rehabilitation work on the bridge will force lane closures between Aug. 7 and Nov. 30. “During these periods, repairs to the expansion joints and steel girder’s coating will be undertaken,” the government said. “Road signage will be in place to advise motorists on both the Ontario and Quebec sides.” Here is a look at the lane closures: Public Services and Procurement Canada says the sidewalk and multi-use pathway will remain accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. According to the department’s website, a $25 million contract has been awarded for all the construction work that will wrap up in 2027. The work is part of a project to renew the wearing surface and girder coating on the bridge, including replacing the asphalt surface, repairing the joints, coating the steel structure and miscellaneous steel repairs. Construction on the original Macdonald-Cartier Bridge was completed in 1965. The construction will happen as officials in Ottawa prepare for an influx of commuters this fall as public servants spend a minimum of four days a week in the office.
