More than 1,100 federal public servants received notices this week their jobs may be affected by the federal government’s plan to cut 28,000 jobs by 2029. Data provided by the unions show employees at five federal departments received workforce adjustment notices the week of Jan. 26, which inform employees their jobs may be eliminated. The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) tells CTV News Ottawa 386 employees at the Correctional Service of Canada, 60 employees at the Department of Justice and 43 staff members at the Parole Board of Canada received notices this week. PSAC said six more of its members at Natural Resources Canada received notices this week, after 219 members received notices at the department in December. The Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) said 40 members at the Department of Justice, 20 members at the Correctional Service of Canada and one employee at the Parole Board of Canada received notices. The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) said this week that 504 employees at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency received notices. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency told CTV News Ottawa that it will cut 587 positions at the department as a result of savings identified through the comprehensive expenditure review. “From the outset, the agency set out to protect front-line inspection capacity and emergency readiness and remain focused on our core mandate of food safety, animal and plant health, science, and enabling international trade,” the CFIA said in a statement. “The reductions reflect these principles and focus on targeted changes to program delivery, operational efficiencies, and reinvestments in front-line capacity.” PIPSC said 134 members at the National Research Council received notices on Jan. 28. Data provided by three federal unions show more than 30 federal departments and museums have issued notices to employees so far in December and January as part of the comprehensive expenditure review.
