Ottawa voters will mark a ballot for a school board trustee when they head to the polls in the Oct. 26 municipal election. Electors will vote for one school board trustee for either the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, Ottawa Catholic School Board, the Conseil des ecoles catholiques du Centre-Est or the Conseil des ecoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario. Trustees will be elected for a four-year term. New rules are being put in place for trustees in all English public and Catholic school boards following the election. The changes include: Ontario has split the director of education role into two positions, a Chief Executive Officer and a Chief Education Officer. The CEO may serve as the Chief Education Officer if qualified in both areas. The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board remains under provincial supervision and there is no word when trustees will be reinstated. Required Qualifications A candidate can run for school board trustee if they are qualified to vote in a school board election and is a resident of the school board district. Qualifications include: The Ottawa Carleton District School Board says candidates for trustees must be a public-school tax supporter. The Ottawa Catholic School Board says candidates must be Roman Catholic and a supporter of the board. Candidates for the CECCE and CEPEO must be a taxpayer of the school board, and your first language is French.
