Voters in Ottawa and eastern Ontario braved a little snow to cast ballots in the 44th Ontario election today.

Premier Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservative Party won a third consecutive majority mandate, with 80 seats.

This was the first Ontario election in the winter since 1981. It also snowed in Ottawa during the provincial election in 1981, with a trace of snow recorded at the Ottawa Airport weather station on March 19, 1981.

Liberal Party candidate Tyler Watt ended 26 years of Progressive Conservative rule in the Ottawa riding of Nepean.

“I’m over the moon right now,” Watt told CTV News Ottawa. “We’ve been working so hard for the last month. This wasn’t how I planned on doing this election; I was just working at the hospital just a little over four weeks ago when I got the notice that Premier Ford was going to call an early election.”

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe is congratulating Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservatives on their election victory.

“Premier Ford has been a great partner to work with and he and his team have been extremely accessible and responsive in supporting Ottawa’s priorities,” Sutcliffe said on X. “I’m looking forward to continuing our strong working relationship to serve the residents of Ottawa and Ontario.”

CTV News projects the NDP will be the Official Opposition at Queen’s Park.

As of 9:42 p.m., the Progressive Conservatives are leading or elected in 79 ridings, compared to 24 seats for the NDP, 13 for the Liberals, 2 for the Green Party and one Independent.

Just two Ottawa ridings still undecided as of 9:40 p.m.

Results for the riding of Orleans will not be released until after one poll closes at 11 p.m.

Liberal Karen McCrimmon is leading in the riding of Kanata Carleton. As of 9:40 p.m., McCrimmon leads with 17,292 votes, compared to 14,847 votes for Progressive Conservative candidate Scott Phelan.

Elections Ontario says voting will be extended until 11 p.m. at Poll 712 in the riding of Orléans.

Results of the electoral district will not be released until after all the polls have closed.

Voters should visit our Voter Information Service at elections.on.ca and check to see if their specific voting locations have been extended.

In non-election news, tonight is the Fullscript Senators Gala, raising money to support the Senators Community Foundation.

Senators owner Michael Andlauer joined CTV News at Six to discuss the Gala, and showed off his jacket with the Senators logo on the inside.

Elections Ontario says it is “your trusted source” for the Ontario election, warning there is misleading information circulating.

“There is so much misinformation and disinformation circulating about this election that you may feel like you’re drowning in it,” the agency said on X. “Amongst all this misleading information, know that Elections Ontario is your trusted source.”

No problems have been reported at Ottawa polling stations today.

7:10 p.m.

Here is a look at the standings at dissolution of the legislature:

• Progressive Conservatives: 79
• NDP: 28 seats
• Liberal: 9 seats
• Green Party: 2 seats
• Independent: 6 seats

Sixty-three seats are required to form a majority government.

7:05 p.m.

Polling stations will be open until 9 p.m. tonight to cast your ballot.

There was a steady stream of people entering the polling station on Rossland Avenue in the riding of Ottawa West-Nepean at 7 p.m.

7 p.m.

Two hours until polls close in Ottawa and across Ontario. You can vote until 9 p.m.

6:30 p.m.

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe will speak with the media Friday morning to discuss the results of the Ontario election and what it could mean for Ottawa.

The main party leaders have made significant promises to voters about their plans for the future of public transit in Ottawa.

Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford announced on Feb. 4 that a re-elected PC government would upload the Ottawa LRT and integrate its operations under Metrolink. The government did say OC Transpo would still operate the line.

The Ontario Liberals are also promising to upload the LRT’s operations to the province, saying it would “ensure reliable, affordable transit for the city of Ottawa.”

The NDP is promising to provide a 50/50 cost-sharing agreement on public transit for municipalities.

6:15 p.m.

CTV’s Katie Griffin reported a spike in visitors to a polling station in Kanata-Carleton at 6:10 p.m. as people headed home from work and school.

6:10 p.m.

CTV News Ottawa has its eyes on two ridings to watch in Ottawa tonight.

CTV’s Katie Griffin is in Kanata-Carleton, where Liberal candidate Karen McCrimmon won a byelection in 2023. The Progressive Conservatives won the riding in 2018 and 2022.

CTV’s Natalie van Rooy is in the riding of Ottawa West-Nepean, where NDP candidate Chandra Pasma is looking to hold on to the seat. The riding of Ottawa West-Nepean has flipped between Liberal, New Democrat and Progressive Conservative since the 1950s. Liberal Bob Chiarelli held the riding from 2010 to 2018, and PC Jeremy Roberts was the MPP for the riding from 2018 to 2022.

6 p.m.

While this is the snowiest Ontario election in Ottawa in 99 years, it hasn’t disrupted voting.

Elections Ontario says no issues have been reported at polling stations across Ottawa today.

“All voting locations are open and voting has not been disrupted,” Elections Ontario said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa.

5:30 p.m.

Here is a look at where the main party leaders are on election night.

Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford is at the Toronto Congress Centre in Etobicoke.

Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie will attend an event at the Mississauga Convention Centre.

NDP Leader Marit Stiles will attend an NDP event at The Great Hall in Toronto.

Green Party leader Mike Schreiner is at the party’s headquarters in Guelph.

4:20 p.m.

Voters heading to the polls on Thursday said it was important for them to make their ballot count in the Ontario election.

“There are a lot of things that need to be corrected, and whoever gets elected needs to work on them,” Dwight Stewart told CTV News Ottawa’s Kimberley Fowler.

One voter said, “this is the most important thing we can do for democracy; get out and vote.”

“Get out and vote. Took maybe six minutes.”

3:50 p.m.

“It could be a lot worse,” one voter said while arriving at a polling station in Ottawa this morning.

The voters told CTV News Ottawa’s Kimberley Fowler they had no trouble getting to the polling station due to the snow.

Environment Canada says 9 cm of snow was recorded at the Ottawa Airport, with the snow stopping around 3 p.m.

Another voter said, “It’s winter; shouldn’t it be this way?”

“It shouldn’t stop you. It just started to snow and as Canadians, come on, it’s nothing.”

3:40 p.m.

It has been a snowy election day in Ottawa.

As of 3 p.m., 9 cm of snow was recorded at the Ottawa Airport. It’s the greatest snowfall for an Ontario election in Ottawa since 9.4 cm of snow fell on Dec. 1, 1926.

Ottawa has seen precipitation in nine out of the last 10 provincial elections. During the June 2, 2022 election, Ottawa received 0.2 mm of rain.

3:35 p.m.

All eyes will be on voter turnout in the Ontario election.

Elections Ontario says 42,280 people cast ballots in Ottawa’s eight provincial ridings during advance polls.

• Ottawa Centre: 8,050 ballots (6.89 per cent of total registered electors)
• Carleton: 7,790 ballots (7.02 per cent of total registered electors)
• Nepean: 5,457 ballots (5.32per cent of total registered electors)
• Orléans: 4,512 ballots (3.83 per cent of total registered electors)
• Ottawa South: 4,496 (4.57 per cent of total registered electors)
• Ottawa West-Nepean: 4,470 ballots (4.94 per cent of total registered electors)
• Kanata-Carleton: 4,287 ballots (4.53 per cent of total registered electors)
• Ottawa-Vanier: 3,218 ballots (3.13 per cent of total registered electors)

3:30 p.m.

At least three Ottawa ridings will have new MPPs after today’s provincial election.

Carleton MPP Goldie Ghamari, Nepean MPP Lisa MacLeod and Ottawa Centre MPP Joel Harden are not seeking re-election.

“Thank you Carleton,“ Ghamari said in a post on X. “It’s been the honour of a lifetime to serve you as your Member of Provincial Parliament. It’s time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life in politics.”

MacLeod posted a message on social media noting this is the first election that her name does not appear on the ballot since the birth of her daughter.

“In my arms and by my side for 19 years, my daughter cast her first ever electoral vote,” MacLeod said. “What makes this even more remarkable is that there has never been an Ontario election since her birth where I have not been on the ballot…until now.”
