An aluminum plant in Kingston, Ont. says it laid off roughly one third of its workforce on Friday due to U.S. tariffs. In a statement to CTV News, Novelis said the workforce reduction impacted 80 workers, including 10 salaried employees and 70 hourly employees. “These are difficult decisions that affect our colleagues and their families, and we are supporting those impacted through this transition,” a spokesperson for Novelis said in a statement. The company said the cuts were necessary due to ““the cost of (Section 232) duties on Canadian aluminum imported into the United States.” Aluminum products were among the new Canadian goods hit with 50 per cent U.S. tariffs on Tuesday.
