Man jumps from window to escape fire in Vanier apartment building

A man in his 50s jumped from a second-storey window to escape a fire in a multi-residential building in Ottawa’s Vanier neighbourhood Sunday afternoon.

The Ottawa Fire Services said it received multiple 9-1-1 calls at 1:30 p.m., reporting heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the building on Granville Street and “one person attempting to jump.”

When firefighters arrived on the scene, thick black smoke was visible from the building and a “working fire” was declared.

“Firefighters initiated a fast attack and advanced a hose line inside the structure,” fire officials said.

No occupants were found inside the three-unit building.

Photos posted on social media showed damage in a second-floor unit with smoke billowing out the windows.

An Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson told CTV News Ottawa the man suffered an ankle injury after jumping from the window and was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The fire was declared under control at 2:06 p.m.

Officials say firefighters protected nearby homes that were at risk of catching fire.

An Ottawa Fire Services investigator has been called in to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
