Family of 10 displaced by fire in Pembroke, Ont.

The Pembroke Fire Department says a family of 10 has been displaced by a house fire.

The fire broke out just after 10 a.m. Sunday at a home on Wallace Street. The fire was found at the back of the home, and it had already spread to a bedroom and was approaching the attic.

Initially, one fire truck and the duty crew responded, but the fire department called in more resources to help handle the blaze. A total of 13 career firefighters and 10 volunteer firefighters attended the incident with five Pembroke Fire Department apparatus responding to the fire.

Firefighters were initially told one member of the family was still inside the home, but it was later confirmed everyone was able to get out. The house had working smoke alarms, which alerted the residents to the fire, a news release said.

One person was transported to the Pembroke Regional Hospital for assessment and two others were assessed at the scene, the fire department said.

The Canadian Red Cross has been called in to assist the family after the home was severely damaged by smoke and heat. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
