City of Ottawa opening hazardous waste collection sites for flood victims

The City of Ottawa says it is opening temporary household hazardous and electronic waste collection sites starting this weekend for flood-affected residents.

Residents affected by the flooding on Canada Day who must dispose of items that can’t go out at the curb, such as paint, automotive fluids, batteries, and computers and other electronics, will have access to four events at two locations over the course of the next week.

Temporary collection sites will be open for eligible extreme weather event-related household hazardous waste on July 11, 13, 14, and 15 in the parking lots of the Mary Pitt Centre, 100 Constellation Dr., and Lakeview Public School, 35 Corkstown Rd., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

A regularly scheduled e-waste drop-off event is also taking place on Saturday at the Tony Graham Recreation Complex, 100 Charlie Rogers Pl., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The next regularly scheduled household hazardous waste drop-off event is taking place on July 25 at the Kanata Research Park, 373 Leggett Dr., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Examples of accepted electronic waste items include:

• Computers and laptops
• Monitors and televisions
• Printers and scanners
• Cell phones and chargers
• Cables, keyboards and other computer accessories

Examples of accepted household hazardous waste items include:

• Paint and paint-related products
• Solvents and household cleaners
• Automotive fluids and antifreeze
• Pesticides and fertilizers
• Batteries (Cover the terminals with clear packing tape, duct tape or electrical tape)
• Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes

The city asks that residents do not mix different household hazardous waste products together.

Items not accepted:

• Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners or other appliances containing refrigerants
• Large household appliances such as stoves, washers and dryers
• Scrap metal
• Commercial or industrial waste

The city says electronic waste can also be dropped off free of charge at the Trail Road landfill. The city’s waste explorer site can be used to see how to dispose of other items.
