Child taken to hospital after being struck by vehicle in Blackburn Hamlet

Ottawa paramedics say a child was injured and taken to hospital after being struck by a vehicle in Blackburn Hamlet on Tuesday morning.

Paramedics spokesperson Marc-Antoine Deschamps says first responders were called to Southpark Drive near Innes Road at approximately 8:20 a.m.

A girl around 10-years-old suffered non-life threatening injuries. She was taken to hospital by ambulance in stable condition.

In a social media post, Orléans West-Innes Coun. Laura Dudas thanked first responders who rushed to the scene.

“I have reached out to the child’s mom and I was incredibly relieved to hear that the child is going to be okay,” Dudas wrote.

She adds that incidents like this are preventable and urged drivers to be vigilant.

“Our neighbourhoods are full of families walking, biking, and getting to school each day. We all share these roads, and every one of us plays a role in keeping them safe. A moment of inattention behind the wheel can change someone else’s life forever,” she said.

“As drivers, we all have a responsibility to slow down, stay alert, and watch for people crossing, especially children walking to and from school. There is no meeting you’re late for, no errand you’re trying to squeeze in, that is more important than someone’s life.”
