A much-loved east end canoe club is at risk of closing unless it raises enough funds by the end of the month. “I’m definitely emotional about this, it’s a big deal,” said Sarah Kennedy, commodore of the Petrie Island Canoe Club, in an interview with CTV News Ottawa. “This is a do or die.” The Petrie Island Canoe Club in Orléans will cease operations unless it raises $78,000 by Nov. 1, according to club volunteers. According to the non-profit organization, the problem is the cost of a new boathouse which cost more than was expected, with a price of around $1.45 million dollars. The club is now looking for a long-term solution. “We’re trying to negotiate a deal with the city to make this public infrastructure, much like a hockey rink or a soccer field.” The city says discussions are ongoing, but no decisions have been made. “Staff met with club officials and discussed possible options that could assist the club in maintaining operations,” said Dan Chenier, general manager of recreation, cultural and facility services, in a statement. “Any potential future city involvement would be considered through the appropriate municipal review and decision-making processes and would be subject to approval by the next city council.” For now, the club continues to collect donations online through a GoFundMe. On the club’s info page for the fundraising campaign, the club says the thousands needed would keep the club open for about one year.
