A novice driver has been charged with stunt driving and having alcohol in their bloodstream following an incident earlier this month in the Township of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands. The incident took place around 7:30 a.m. on July 5. An Ontario Provincial Police officer stopped a vehicle on Highway 6 that was travelling 148 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. “A traffic stop was initiated, and further investigation revealed the driver was a novice driver,” police said. A roadside breath test produced an ‘alert,’ and the 17-year-old driver from Lively was charged with stunt driving and being a novice driver with a blood alcohol concentration of more than zero. The driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days and the vehicle has been impounded for two weeks. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice, Provincial Offences Court, at a later date. “The OPP reminds motorists that excessive speed remains one of the leading contributing factors in serious and fatal motor vehicle collisions,” police said. “Speeding significantly reduces a driver’s ability to react to changing road and traffic conditions, increasing the risk of devastating consequences for all road users.”
