University of Sudbury unveils plan for new francophone economic research hub

The University of Sudbury announced plans to open a research institute to help shape francophone economic development in the north.

The University of Sudbury announced plans to establish the Institut économique de l’Ontario français (IEOF), a new research and engagement initiative aimed at bolstering economic, social and linguistic development in the province’s francophone communities.

Unveiled at the annual forum of the Fédération des gens d’affaires in Sudbury, the institute will focus on applied and fundamental research to drive strategic growth in Ontario’s francophone and bilingual sectors.

Its mandate includes workforce planning, innovation support, and enhancing the cultural and linguistic vitality of French-speaking regions, particularly in northern Ontario.

The Francophone Economic Institute of Ontario will prioritize three key areas:

• Research on social, linguistic and economic trends, including bilingual employability, to provide data for policymakers and businesses.
• Collaboration with public, private and institutional sectors to strengthen workforce development and bilingualism in the economy.
• Support for francophone entrepreneurship, helping businesses expand within and beyond Ontario while positioning French as an economic asset.

“This project reflects our ambition to make the Université de Sudbury a hub for research, innovation and regional development in francophone Ontario,” said Serge Miville, the university’s president and vice-chancellor, in a news release Thursday.

“The institute has the potential to highlight the economic strength of our Francophonie and contribute to the province’s economic growth and cultural vitality.”

Dominic Mailloux, board chair of the Fédération des gens d’affaires, praised the initiative as a boon for Ontario’s francophone business community.

“By equipping our decision-makers and entrepreneurs with solid data and targeted analysis, the (institute) will help strengthen our provincial economy and support the sustainable development of our regions,” he said.

The institute’s initial phase will involve stakeholder consultations, governance planning and partnership-building to solidify its structure and long-term impact.
