Transport driver in Cochrane had been drinking, truck had major defect

A commercial motor vehicle driver from southern Ontario has been charged after police spotted him driving a vehicle with a major defect.

In a news release June 4, Ontario Provincial Police said they stopped the vehicle May 6 “after observing equipment deficiencies and driving-related concerns involving a CMV.”

“Officers determined the driver had consumed alcohol,” police said.

“Police issued the breath demand into an approved screening device, which confirmed the driver’s blood alcohol concentration to be above zero. Under Ontario law, commercial motor vehicle drivers are subject to a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol.”

Southern Ont. driver

The 45-year-old driver from Caledon was issued a three-day driver’s licence suspension, and police issued five Provincial Offence Notices.

Charges include driving a CMV with a major vehicle deficit, failing to enter a defect in the daily inspection report and having an improper number plate light.

A trucking company based in Brampton was charged with failing to ensure performance standards are met and failing to ensure daily inspection is conducted properly.

“The James Bay OPP reminds the public that if you suspect that someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, call 911 immediately,” police said.

“In doing so, you may save a life.”
