Thunder Bay police say impaired teen crashed into 8 vehicles, fences, fire hydrant

An 18-year-old in Thunder Bay has been charged with numerous offences after a pickup truck driving more than 100 km/h crashed into several vehicles, trees, fences and a fire hydrant, causing significant damage.

The Thunder Bay Police Service said the incident took place Feb. 16 near Arthur Street, a residential area of the city.

“Officers observed the vehicle driving at a high rate of speed on the sidewalk along Empire Avenue, striking at least eight vehicles, multiple fences, trees, shrubs and a fire hydrant,” police said in a news release Thursday.

“The vehicle came to a stop after colliding with a snowbank and a sign.”

The 18-year-old was charged with driving while impaired by alcohol and drugs, dangerous driving, fleeing police, stunt driving, three counts of not stopping at a stop sign, failing to surrender his licence and permit, possessing cannabis while under age 19, driving with cannabis readily available to the driver, being a class G1 driver without a qualified driver in the vehicle and failing to file notification of a change of address.

The accused has been released from custody with a future court date.
