The Greater Sudbury Police Service took a new approach to this year’s Canada Road Safety Week, releasing a ‘cheeky video’ that urges drivers to mind the rules because officers in their patrol uniforms are paying close attention. The video, posted to social media Tuesday by the police service’s Integrated Traffic Safety Unit, has drawn attention for its lighthearted reference to tight police trousers. “Everyone was talking about their tight pants, so they made this video,” the service said in the social media post. The local police warned that officers will be active on local roads as part of a national enforcement and awareness campaign. “Officers will be patrolling Greater Sudbury roadways in their tight pants, ensuring driver sobriety and compliance with posted speed limits,” the service wrote. Tuesday marked the start of Canada Road Safety Week, a seven-day national campaign coordinated by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP). National campaign focus The 2026 edition of the campaign carries the theme ‘Every Road, Every Day, Everyone.’ The national association said the campaign is designed to increase public compliance with safe driving measures to save lives and reduce injuries on Canadian roads. “The focus of this campaign continues to be on the elimination of impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and driving without a seatbelt,” said CACP in a news release on May 12. The association stressed that collisions are preventable and that drivers hold significant responsibility for safety. “We need Canadians to acknowledge, accept, and take responsibility for road safety and their driving behaviours this week and every day of the year,” said Chief Superintendent André Phelps, co-chair of the CACP’s Traffic Safety Committee. “This campaign is meant to be a friendly reminder that each and every driver has an impact on road safety when they take the wheel,” said fellow co-chair Insp. Chris Romanchych. “Choose your driving behaviours wisely.” Sudbury police’s message While the national campaign took a serious tone on impaired and distracted driving, Sudbury police have opted for a more unusual appeal. The post by police in Greater Sudbury concludes with a direct message to local motorists. “Drive safe, Sudbury - the tight pants are watching,” the service said. Canada Road Safety Week runs until May 19. RELATED STORIES:
