Canadians evidently have a serious case of Anne Carson fever. The Toronto-born poet’s Nobel Prize win has sent sales of her books soaring by more than 10,000 per cent at Indigo, while some libraries are seeing an unprecedented rush for her work and even a Canadian rock band is enjoying a streaming boost. Indigo says sales of Carson’s titles jumped a staggering 10,325 per cent on Thursday, the day she was named the winner of the Nobel Prize in literature, compared with the previous day. Online searches for Carson’s books surged even higher, climbing 20,809 per cent day over day. The Canadian bookseller says it could not share how many copies were actually sold, as that information is proprietary and commercially sensitive. Indigo says it sold 18 different titles by Carson on Thursday, with “Autobiography of Red,” “The Beauty of the Husband” and “Red Doc” leading the charge. The Carson contagion is even spilling over into music streaming. Dave Bidini of Canadian rock band Rheostatics says the three tracks featuring Carson on the group’s 2025 album “The Great Lakes Suite” have suddenly become its three most popular songs on Spotify and Apple Music. Carson contributed spoken-word performances of three poems to the album, which explores North America’s Great Lakes through music, poetry and storytelling. “Immediately, the top three most listened to tracks are now the three Anne Carson tracks,” Bidini says in an interview from Athens, Greece, where he was vacationing when the Nobel was announced. He says the songs have displaced longtime favourites in the band’s catalogue, though he didn’t have exact streaming figures. “People have flocked to the record to listen to it, so that’s kind of been nice.” Bidini says the collaboration came about through bandmate Kevin Hearn, who met Carson through the late Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed, an admirer of her work. Carson recorded her poems in a Michigan studio and gave the band considerable freedom to build music around her words. For Bidini, the sudden attention is particularly gratifying given Carson’s uncompromising approach to her craft. “All she did was write,” he said, noting that Carson never spent much time cultivating a public persona or social media following. “I think it’s important to be reminded that great work will stand no matter how many Instagram posts you have per day or whatever.” Meanwhile, the Carson craze is playing out on library waitlists, too. Ottawa Public Library says it now has 972 holds across 12 Carson titles in its collection, up from just 14 before Thursday’s Nobel announcement. The library says it has moved quickly to order additional print and digital copies to meet the sudden demand. “While there is always a bump in holds no matter who wins the Nobel for Literature, it is really heartening to see such an interest for a Canadian author,” said library spokesman Anthony Langlois. Calgary Public Library is seeing a similar rush, with 435 holds placed on Carson’s print titles since Thursday’s announcement. That’s out of 447 total holds currently placed on her print books, with 131 readers waiting for “Autobiography of Red” alone. “That is an unprecedented rate of holds placement for poetry in one day, let alone any title,” said library selector Kari Brawn. The library says it is ordering additional print copies of Carson’s books to keep up with demand. In Quebec, Carson’s Nobel win has turned her from a barely borrowed author to heavily in demand. Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec says just one of Carson’s works was borrowed from Montreal’s Grande Bibliothèque in September. But nearly all its print copies were reserved on Thursday. As of Friday, the institution had 241 reservations for Carson’s titles in French and English. Carson-mania reached the East Coast, too. Halifax Public Libraries says it’s recorded 152 new holds across the five Carson print titles in its collection since Thursday, an increase it attributes to her Nobel win. One of Canada’s most acclaimed writers, Carson is known for her boundary-pushing work, which moves freely between poetry, prose, classical mythology and literary criticism. The Nobel win has also arrived ahead of a new book from Carson, “Beware the Man Whose Handwriting Sways Like a Reed in the Wind,” which is slated for release in February 2027. Bidini hopes the newfound attention will help readers discover the “achingly personal” qualities beneath Carson’s often experimental writing. “Poetry is perceived by some people as being a balloon that we’ll never be able to reach. It’s so elevated, it’s high above us, but it’s not,” he says. “It’s ground-level storytelling, it’s voices from the streets, really, and it’s prosaic and accessible and incredibly rewarding to read. And the fact that people are going out to buy those books just makes it all better.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Oct. 9, 2026. Alex Nino Gheciu, The Canadian Press
