Hockey fans in northwestern Ontario will have a rare opportunity to see the Stanley Cup up close when Thunder Bay native Jordan Staal brings the trophy to his hometown this weekend. The veteran NHL forward, who won the cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2026, will host a community event at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium on Aug. 8. As captain of the Hurricanes last season Staal was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs ‘Most Valuable Player,’ becoming the oldest player to win the award. Staal also won a Stanley Cup with the as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009, scoring two goals and an assist in the seven-game series. Event details “The event is free and open to the public,” the city said in a news release. Doors will open at 10 a.m., with the event running from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Organizers said entry will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis and the lineup may be closed before the scheduled end time if the venue reaches capacity – adding that autographs will not be available due to time constraints and anticipated attendance and that attending does not guarantee a photo opportunity. The gathering is being organized in partnership with the municipality, the auditorium and the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. Mayor welcomes champion home Mayor Ken Boshcoff expressed enthusiasm about the visit, highlighting Staal’s connection to the city’s hockey legacy. “We are thrilled to welcome Jordan Staal and the Stanley Cup back to Thunder Bay,” Boshcoff said. “Jordan continues a proud tradition of hockey excellence in our community and has given local fans a unique opportunity to celebrate one of hockey’s greatest achievements. It’s exciting to welcome him home and give residents the chance to see hockey’s most iconic trophy up close.” The city added that it “looks forward to joining residents in welcoming Jordan home and celebrating this proud moment for Thunder Bay’s hockey community.” Parking and accessibility Ongoing construction at the auditorium on Paul Shaffer Drive will affect parking arrangements for the event. Public will be directed to park at Canada Games Complex, Port Arthur Arena, Port Arthur Stadium and designated on-street spots on Winnipeg Avenue. Accessible parking and drop-off accommodations will be available, with staff and volunteers on site to assist attendees with mobility needs. The city said attendees are being asked to follow event signage and directions from volunteers and staff.
