Several near misses between snowmobiles, logging trucks in northern Ont.

Northern Ont. police are teaming up with Timmins Snowmobile Club for a ramp up in patrols to ensure riders are having fun safely.

Northern Ont. police are issuing a safety alert for OFSC Trail A after several near misses involving snowmobiles and logging trucks.

Snowmobilers are being urged to come to a complete stop at all marked road crossings after several reports of near misses in the Lowther area between Kapuskasing and Hearst, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Thursday.

“A recent incident saw a snowmobiler nearly collide with a haul truck after failing to stop at a clearly marked stop sign,” the James Bay detachment said.

“This is an active logging area and truck drivers may have limited visibility.”

Other safety tips include:

• Always stop at designated crossings
• Look both ways before proceeding
• Expect large trucks and give them space
