Sauna catches fire in Sault Ste. Marie

Firefighters in Sault Ste. Marie were called to a sauna fire Jan. 20 just before 10 p.m. on Laronde Avenue.

“Upon arrival, there was visible smoke and flames from the sauna structure in the backyard area of the residence,” the fire department said in a news release Jan. 21.

“Fire crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire.”

Fuel-burning appliances

The incident is a reminder to maintain “fuel-burning appliances and chimneys, including those within a sauna,” officials said.

Under the Ontario Fire Code, “all solid-fuel-burning appliances and equipment shall be maintained in accordance with CSA-B365.”

Regular maintenance and proper installation of these appliances can help prevent a fire occurrence, officials said.

“There is significant fire and smoke damage to the sauna structure. There were no injuries to report.”
