A 25-year-old man is facing more than a dozen charges after police in Sault Ste. Marie say he sprayed pepper spray at officers who attempted to arrest him on an outstanding warrant. Warrant leads to confrontation Police said officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s Division 2 Unit were on patrol at about 1:30 p.m. on Monday when they spotted a man known to have an active arrest warrant walking in the 700 block of Wellington Street East. “When officers advised the accused of the warrant, the accused continued walking, removed a canister of pepper spray from their pocket, and sprayed it in the officers’ direction multiple times,” police said in a news release Tuesday. The officers were able to take the man into custody following the incident on Aug. 31. “No physical injuries were reported,” police said. Weapons seized After the arrest, police said a search of the accused turned up the pepper spray canister used in the incident, as well as a concealed knife. Lengthy list of charges As a result, the man has been charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, administering a noxious thing, resisting a peace officer, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of carrying a concealed weapon. In addition, the accused faces six counts of failing to comply with a probation order and three counts of possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order. The man was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
