A 59-year-old woman from Sables-Spanish Rivers Township faces an impaired driving charge after Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of erratic behaviour involving a horseback rider on Sugar Lake Road in Walford, Ont. The incident occurred on July 8 at about 10 p.m., when officers were called after a driver allegedly honked, yelled and drove dangerously near a horseback rider. The same driver then directed aggressive behaviour toward another vehicle attempting to assist. Authorities said they located the motorists a short time later and began an investigation. As a result, the accused has been charged with operation while impaired and is scheduled to appear in court in Espanola on Sept. 22. In addition to the charges, under provincial legislation, the motorist also received 90-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days at the owner’s expense. Police appeal for safety on the roads In a news release Monday, OPP emphasized that roads are shared spaces, urging drivers to exercise caution around horseback riders by slowing down, avoiding sudden noises and passing only when safe. “If you witness dangerous driving behaviour, do not hesitate to call 911. Your call could save someone’s life,” said OPP Const. Berkley Parisien, in a social media post detailing the incident. ‘Make the Call’ OPP also reiterated that no amount of alcohol or drugs is safe before driving, encouraging the public to report suspected impaired drivers immediately. “If you suspect an impaired driver on our roads, waterways or trails, don’t hesitate to ‘Make the Call’ and dial 911,” said police.
