Northern Ontario rally demands urgent safety fixes for Hwy. 11

Hundreds of residents, business leaders and community advocates gathered in Cochrane, Ont., on Saturday, joining a coordinated regional rally to demand urgent improvements to the safety conditions on Highway 11.

The event, part of an initiative led by the Northern Corridor Chamber of Commerce and the Cochrane Board of Trade, saw participants from across the region deliver a unified message that the current state of the northern transportation corridor is unacceptable.

Corridor of ‘unacceptable risk’

In a speech to the crowd, Cochrane Mayor Peter Politis framed the rally as a collective stand against normalized danger.

“Highway 11 has become a corridor of unacceptable risk and our community can no longer stand by as tragic and preventable loss of life continues,” he said.

Politis emphasized the personal toll the highway has taken on the community, referencing past tragedies.

“As a community we have lived through chaos and mayhem on this highway – events that shook our sense of safety and left our community reeling. And we carry the direct loss of one of our own families,” he said to rally attendees.

The emotional impact was a recurring theme, with speakers throughout the event highlighting “the emotional toll on families, first responders and communities who have endured repeated tragedies,” according to a news release from the town.

Provincial engagement, immediate actions

Politis said that the issue has gained serious attention at the provincial level following his meetings with senior decision-makers at Queen’s Park in the days leading up to the rally.

He announced concrete commitments from the Ministry of Transportation, including enhanced safety enforcement.

“The MTO will begin enhanced safety enforcement right here at the Cochrane scales – conducting spot checks to ensure drivers and vehicles are properly licensed, properly equipped and safe to be on our roads,” Politis said.

Officials with the Town of Cochrane advised that the MTO has committed to ongoing collaboration with local and regional leadership to address systemic issues and is coordinating with the town and the Ontario Provincial Police to improve communication during closures and rethink traffic control strategies.

Building a coordinated response

Further local action is also underway. Politis outlined new collaborative measures designed to improve emergency response during highway incidents.

“We are establishing coordinated situation tables – a unified command approach – so that when closures happen, we are not scrambling. We are managing,” he said.

Politis described the effort as a “unified call to set a clear course toward long-overdue, effective solutions.”

The town stated that this proactive approach reinforces a shared commitment to keeping residents safe during frequent and severe disruptions along the corridor.

Growing regional movement

Organizers positioned the Cochrane rally as one part of a broader northern movement demanding change, saying that “communities across northern Ontario have voiced increasing frustration with the hazardous conditions and the unacceptable frequency of serious incidents along the corridor.”

Politis concluded his remarks by framing the rally as a starting point for sustained advocacy.

“Together, we will protect our families, our workers and our communities,” he said.

“Together, we will ensure that the voices of the North are not only heard, but acted upon.”
