Police in northern Ontario are warning the public about the re-emergence of the ‘door-kick challenge,’ which is currently trending on some social media platforms. In a news release Monday, the Temiskaming and Kirkland Lake detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police said reports of similar incidents have occurred in the region in recent days. “Police are urging this behaviour needs to stop immediately,” the OPP said. “This challenge involves individuals forcefully kicking or striking the doors of homes while recording the act for social media. These incidents can cause significant property damage and fear for the occupants.” Police warn that anyone participating in the challenge could face Criminal Code charges, including break and enter, mischief to property, causing a disturbance and trespassing. “There is no excuse for this behaviour, and the intent to create a video or participate in a trend does not reduce criminal responsibility,” police said. Charges will be laid “Police are advising individuals to stop participating in this challenge immediately and to understand that entering or attempting to enter someone’s home by force is a crime.” “Parents and guardians are encouraged to speak with youth about the legal consequences and the potential dangers of confronting homeowners,” police added. Anyone who is a victim of the challenge is urged to call police and report what happened. “If it is safe to do so, they should document damage and provide video footage to investigators,” police said. “Preventive measures such as outdoor lighting, doorbell cameras, or motion-activated devices may help deter future incidents.” The Temiskaming OPP and the Kirkland Lake OPP said they will investigate all incidents and lay charges when appropriate. Anyone with information is asked to contact their local OPP detachment or call 1-888-310-1122. For emergencies, dial 911.
