More counterfeit money found in northern Ont.

For the second time this week, there is a report of counterfeit bills being passed in northeastern Ontario.

This time, a fake $20 was discovered in Moose Factory First Nation on March 25.

“Police are warning the public to practise due diligence when accepting Canadian bank notes after an alleged counterfeit bill was turned over in Moose Factory First Nation,” the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service said in a news release.

“When police observed the bank note, they recognized several features that appeared inconsistent with a genuine $20 Canadian bill.”

Counterfeit cash usually closely resembles real money, but often lacks the built-in security features.

“Fake bills may feel different, have poor print quality, or be missing important elements like transparent windows, holograms or raised ink,” police said.

“If someone attempts to provide you with a bill you believe is counterfeit, politely refuse it and ask for another bill or alternative payment. If you believe you have received a counterfeit bill, do not use it. Knowingly passing counterfeit money is a criminal offence.”
