Concerns over the snow load on the roofs of the recreation complex and library in Espanola have closed the facilities until further notice. Signs on the doors of the rec centre, issued by the town’s building department, state the building is unsafe and outline orders to make it safe. One order is to remove snow from areas of the roof that exceed the maximum designed snow load set out in the building code. The town confirms that, after an internal assessment on Tuesday morning, the buildings were closed out of caution. The recreation complex is a hub for activities, including hockey, figure skating, a gym and pool, among other activities. “An external contractor will be working on snow removal from the roof likely starting tomorrow,” the town said Tuesday. “We look forward to reopening as soon as possible.” The township advise officials will provide further updates on timelines on Wednesday.
