Police chief Ron Gignac described the event as an ‘unfortunate incident.’ Gignac confirmed that officials do not suspect foul play in connection with the death. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim. The investigation into the collapse is now being led by the Wiikwemkoong band office. The structure involved is owned by the unceded territory and officials are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the failure.
