A man has died on Manitoulin Island after an awning collapsed, police have confirmed. The Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory's band office is reviewing the incident

The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service has confirmed to CTV News that a man is dead following the collapse of an awning on Manitoulin Island over the weekend.

The incident occurred on March 7, when the structure covering the porch of a facility gave way.

Police chief Ron Gignac described the event as an ‘unfortunate incident.’

Gignac confirmed that officials do not suspect foul play in connection with the death.

Authorities have not released the identity of the victim.

The investigation into the collapse is now being led by the Wiikwemkoong band office.

The structure involved is owned by the unceded territory and officials are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the failure.
