Hundreds in northeastern Ontario still without power

With some areas still without power after the freezing rainstorms, Tony Ryma gets the latest from Hydro One spokesperson Tiziana Baccega Rosa.

Power has been restored to more than 637,000 customers across the province following an intense storm, but hundreds in the northeast are still waiting to get their lights back on.

Parry Sound area

In Parry Sound, 332 customers are still without power and there is no estimated restoration time yet as crews are still assessing the damage, Hydro One said on its outage map.

MacTier Public School is closed again Tuesday for the second day in a row as it is still without power, a spokesperson for the Near North District School Board said in an email.

MacTier is about 40 kilometres south of Parry Sound.

Noelville

Just under 100 customers in the Noelville area are also still without power. The power is anticipated to be restored by 3 p.m. Tuesday “pending safe personnel or equipment access.”

Manitoulin Island

On Manitoulin Island, 16 power outages affecting more than 100 customers remain Tuesday morning.

Customers between Gore Bay and Kagawong are expected to have their power restored by 3 p.m. Tuesday, while the damage is still being assessed in the Sheshegwaning and Meldrum Bay areas.

Finally, a small outage in Cochrane affecting fewer than 20 customers is expected to be restored by 9:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Meanwhile, hundreds of outages remain in eastern Ontario and dozens continue in the central part of the province.

“Given the severity and widespread damage caused by this storm, we expect restoration in the hardest hit areas to continue throughout the week. For remote areas, restoration may take longer,” Hydro One said in an update on its website.

“Road access continues to be a challenge in hardest hit areas, along with safety concerns of trees and tree limbs coming down. Customers in the hardest hit areas will be without power overnight.”

Repair crews are focusing first on restoring main lines and then will shift to clearing damage from lines that “serve smaller groups of customers.”

“We know how difficult it is to be without power. We want to get you all back on as quickly as possible. We are sharing this information so that you can make decisions for you and your loved ones,” the utility company said.

“Stay clear of any fallen power lines. If you spot a fallen line, keep at least 10 metres back, even if it does not appear to be live. Report it to Hydro One at 1-800-434-1235.”
