A Sudbury resident and a northeastern Ontario woman have become the latest big winners in the Health Sciences North Foundation’s monthly 50/50 raffle, walking away with a combined total of more than half a million dollars.

The foundation announced the March results on social media, naming Guy Gervais of Sudbury, ticket number CA-19054974, as the $75,000 add-on raffle winner and Lise L., ticket number BR-55232302, as the grand prize winner of $442,220 in the HSN 50/50 draw.

‘Made my day, man’

The pair learned about their wins the morning of March 27 in recorded phone calls from Shane Gordon, the manager of lottery and websites for the HSN Foundation.

When Gordon informed Guy Gervais of his $75,000 win on a $10 add-on ticket, Gervais could hardly believe it.

“Are you serious?” he asked.

“That’s exciting. Wow, that’s exciting. (You) made my day, man,” Gervais said.

He thanked Gordon during the call.

“Shane. God bless you, Shane,” Gervais said. “Oh man. Thank you.”

Gordon praised Gervais for his support of both the raffle and the hospital.

“Well, thank you for all of your support for not just the HSN 50/50, but the hospital in general. You’re making a huge difference,” Gordon said.

Gervais replied, “Right on man.”

‘Oh my god, this is awesome’

Gordon then called Lise L., who seemed to sense something significant was coming.

When Gordon asked if she was sitting down before revealing the $442,220 jackpot amount, Lise L. reacted with shock.

“Oh my god, don’t tell me,” she said.

“No. Way, man ... Oh my god. This is awesome.”

She expressed gratitude for the win.

“You don’t know how awesome this is. Thank you so much,” she said.

Lise L. quickly began thinking about practical ways to use the money.

“I can get my garage now,” she said.

When Gordon asked what she might spend the winnings on, she mentioned an immediate need.

“Well, I need a snowblower because mine’s no good anymore,” she said.

Gordon noted the timing of the draws as spring arrives in northeastern Ontario.

“A huge congratulations to both of our winners today. What an amazing time to win a whole pile of cash when there’s a pile of snow on the ground and we’re all thinking about warm weather,” he said.

Lottery supports health care

The foundation’s 50/50 fundraiser supports health-care services at Health Sciences North, with half the proceeds going to the winner and the other half funding hospital care.

Since its launch in 2020, the HSN 50/50 has raised more than $62 million, with $31 million awarded to winners and $21.7 million reinvested into patient care, research and facility upgrades at Health Sciences North.

Funds from ticket purchases support:

• specialized surgeries and procedures,
• enhanced care for neonatal patients,
• cancer research and treatment improvements,
• future capital redevelopment projects, and
• under Ontario’s lottery regulations, none of the proceeds go toward administrative salaries.

The lottery’s real-time updated jackpot continues to grow with each ticket sold, offering another chance for a life-changing win while supporting healthcare in northeastern Ontario.

Tickets for the April draw are available to purchase right now, with sales ending at 11:59 p.m. on April 30. The jackpot-winning ticket will be drawn on May 1 at 10 a.m.

HSN 50/50 lottery tickets can be purchased online, at the lottery kiosk at HSN on Ramsey Lake Road or at many retail locations in Greater Sudbury.
