Highway 17 reopens south of Kingsway in Sudbury after two-vehicle crash

Details are limited at this time but a two-vehicle crash on Sudbury’s southeast bypass prompts a police shutdown of the highway.

A ‘serious’ two-vehicle crash closed a section of Highway 17 in both directions about four kilometres south of Kingsway, in Greater Sudbury, on Tuesday afternoon for several hours.

Ontario Provincial Police said the crash occurred on the highway bypass before 2 p.m. and the closure extended from the Kingsway to the Highway 69 junction.

“Injuries are being assessed,” the OPP said in a social media post.

“Please avoid the area and use alternate routes.”

“I can confirm the OPP are currently at a serious collision on highway 17, bypass,” said OPP Const. Rob Lewis in a message to CTV News Tuesday afternoon.

Road reopened

The roadway reopened shortly before 9 p.m., OPP said in a social media update.

Police had advised drivers to expect a prolonged closure while an on-site investigation and clean-up effort take place.

OPP have not released any further details on injuries or indicated if any charges are pending.
