Glencore Integrated Nickel Operations has confirmed a dust release from its smelter stack in Greater Sudbury affected the nearby community of Falconbridge this week. The company said the incident occurred overnight from September 23-24 while the smelter was not operating with the release happening during maintenance cleaning of the dust collection system, known as an electrostatic precipitator. “Our preliminary investigation suggests that about 1 cubic meter of dust was gradually dispersed near the smelter overnight from September 23-24, 2025,” Glencore said in a news release late Friday. The company said the substance, which residents reported as visible dark specks on surfaces like vehicles on Wednesday, is “smelter dust” or for residents of Falconbridge – a term commonly referred to as fallout. Glencore said testing has confirmed it is composed mainly of iron and silica, with smaller amounts of nickel, sulfur, copper and cobalt and traces of other elements. Cleanup underway as officials assess impact Glencore stated it is working with Public Health Sudbury & Districts and the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, providing them with sampling results. The agencies are assessing the situation to provide advice to the company and the public. “We are committed to providing information as quickly as possible as the investigation progresses,” Glencore said. A cleanup effort is now underway. The company reported that as of Friday, all public spaces in Falconbridge – including playgrounds, community centres and the legion – had been cleaned. Smelter response teams have visited every home in the community to assess damage and offer cleaning services. “Cleaning services, including high-pressure washing, will be offered for the foreseeable future,” the Glencore said. The company estimates its teams have contacted approximately 300 residents directly or by leaving information pamphlets. Glencore said it is committed to addressing all concerns. “We remain committed to responding to every inquiry and to restoring any damage caused by the dust release,” the company said – adding that an additional resource team has been mobilized to handle communications. Affected residents are advised to follow guidance from public health and can contact Glencore’s Community Line at 705-693-2761 ext. 3989.
