Driver charged after near head-on collision on Hwy. 531

A 34-year-old driver is facing a careless driving charge after a vehicle crossed the centre line of a highway near Bonfield, prompting a 911 call and a multi-agency response on Tuesday evening.

Ontario Provincial Police, along with fire services and paramedics, were dispatched to Highway 531 around 6:10 p.m. on March 31 following a report that a vehicle had nearly caused a head-on collision before entering the ditch.

“Thankfully, no injuries were reported,” OPP said in a social media post.

Police described the road conditions as “clear” at the time.

As a result, the driver, whose identity was not released by police, was charged with careless driving.

Safety reminder

OPP used the incident to remind motorists about the risks of distracted or inattentive driving.

“Even a momentary lapse in attention can have serious consequences,” OPP wrote.

“Stay focused, avoid distractions and remain alert behind the wheel at all times,” added OPP Const. Kyler Brouwer.
