Sudbury police say an investigation into suspected drug activity in the downtown core has led to the arrest of two local men and the seizure of fentanyl, OxyContin pills and cash. In a news release, Det. Staff Sgt. Darin Heffern said the Greater Sudbury Police Service’s Drug Enforcement Unit had received information regarding suspected drug trafficking in the downtown core earlier this summer and launched an investigation. Hand-to-hand drug transaction On July 30, police said investigators observed what they believed to be a hand-to-hand drug transaction near Beech Street, during which two individuals exchanged money for illicit drugs. As a result of the investigation, a 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old man, both local residents, were arrested. A search of the men incident to their arrest resulted in the seizure of 6.6 grams of fentanyl, two 5 mg OxyContin pills and $640 in cash. “The estimated street value of the drugs seized is approximately $670,” said police. Multiple charges laid The 35-year-old man has been charged with drug trafficking, drug possession and possession of property obtained by crime. The 33-year-old man has been charged with two counts of drug possession and possession of property obtained by crime. “Their names cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process,” police said. Both men were released on undertakings and are scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 21.
