Flags at a downtown hotel have been lowered in honour of a worker who died on the job. A statement from James Richardson & Sons Ltd., which owns Fairmont Winnipeg, confirmed a construction worker died after an incident Thursday. It said the general contractor overseeing the hotel’s exterior renovation informed the company. “Management, directors and shareholders of Lombard Hospitality are deeply saddened by this tragic news,” it said, extending condolences to the person’s family, friends and colleagues. The statement did not say what happened or how the person was injured, and it did not provide the person’s name or age. The statement said the worker was employed by a subcontractor. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the scene, and Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health was notified right away, according to the statement. CTV News has reached out to Winnipeg police and Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health for more information. The hotel closed to all guests this summer for extensive renovations, including remodeling of all 340 rooms.
