Ontario Provincial Police and Crime Stoppers have released images from a security video and are seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect involved in a mischief and theft investigation in Wawa. Crime Stoppers of Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District, in partnership with the OPP, issued a plea for help on Friday and detailed the incident last month. Authorities said the incident occurred at about 1 p.m. on Sept. 24 at a local boat launch. “An unknown individual broke into two vehicles parked at the Magpie River boat launch on Steephill Dam Road, north of Wawa,” said Crime Stoppers in a news release. “Both vehicles sustained significant damage.” Crime Stoppers said approximately $1,000 worth of property was stolen from the vehicles. “The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 40 to 50 years old, between 5’10” (178 cm) and 6’ (183 cm) tall, with a muscular build, a bald head and a goatee,” said Crime Stoppers. Authorities said the man was seen wearing a black T-shirt, black shorts and white running shoes. He also appears to have a tattoo on the inside of his left forearm. “He concealed his face with a black ski mask and wore black gloves,” said Crime Stoppers. Portions of the incident were captured by security cameras, and OPP and Crime Stoppers are requesting the public’s assistance with identifying the suspect. Authorities have distributed the images and a video along with an appeal for information. Crime Stoppers said the suspect was driving a grey Lexus SUV. Appealing to the community “Do you recognize this individual?” Crime Stoppers asked. Anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the suspect is asked to contact OPP or Crime Stoppers anonymously. “If you have information, please contact Crime Stoppers,” the organization said in the video.
