Christine Fréchette announces tax cut for 75,000 small, medium businesses

Quebec Premier Christine Frechette said she hopes the small tax cut for small and medium-sized businesses will help them stay competitive.

With just a few months to go before the next election, Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette has announced a one-percentage-point tax cut for 75,000 small and medium-sized businesses.

That could mean savings of nearly $630 million over five years for the businesses concerned.

“Each entrepreneur could save up to $5,000 per year,” the government explained.

Fréchette made the announcement Wednesday morning in the Beauce alongside Finance Minister Eric Girard, Minister Delegate for the Economy Daniel Bernard and Beauce-Nord MNA Luc Provençal.

The Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government explained it is forgoing revenue at a time when public finances are being weighed down by successive deficits.

“This measure aims to make local small and medium businesses even more competitive,” the government said. “The reduction in the tax rate will give them additional leeway to continue investing, innovating and contributing fully to the growth of the Quebec economy.”

One of Fréchette’s first measures also included a full or partial refund of the “welcome tax” for first-time homebuyers.

In his latest budget, Girard set aside $1.3 billion over five years for the new premier.
