Laval police set up command post to gather info on the attempted murder of a business owner

A man was shot and killed in a parking lot in Laval two years ago, and police are looking for information.

Laval police (SPL) is asking for the public’s help to uncover information about the attempted murder of business owner Ali Chaaban in 2024.

“New evidence has allowed the case to move forward and establish links between the various individuals involved,” the force notes. “Investigators are actively pursuing efforts to identify and bring to justice all individuals linked to this attempted murder, regardless of their role or where they are located.”

Police explain that at 1:07 p.m. on Feb. 9, 2024, several 911 calls were made about gunshots in a commercial parking lot off St-Martin Blvd. in Laval.

“Officers found a man that was struck by gunshots. He survived the attack and this has been an ongoing investigation of our major crime unit,” said Sgt. Laurent Arsenault of the Laval police.

He escaped without serious injuries.

Following that incident, police say that one of Chaaban’s businesses was targeted twice by “acts of violence before ceasing operations.”

On Feb. 14, 2024, at 3 a.m., the Antika restaurant-lounge was struck by gunfire.

“A 29-year-old man, Terron Martin Julien, was arrested and later convicted of the crime,” police state.

On March 22, 2024, at 11 p.m., the same business was hit by an arson attack, causing minor damage.

As a result, a command post is in place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the commercial parking lot at 1690 de l’Avenir Blvd.

“We have had recent developments that are pointing towards the masterminds of the attack,” said Arsenault.

Investigators say they are also looking into overarching allegations of extortion at Laval businesses.

“If you have paid for something for protection to criminal organization, you are not a criminal. You will be considered as victims and are looking forward to work with you,” added Arsenault.
