For the past four years, three Montreal hospitals have continued to make Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals list. The MUHC’s Montreal General Hospital placed highest in the city on the list of 250 global hospital centres at 89 (same as in 2025). The General is the fifth highest in the country, according to Newsweek and the statistics organization Statista. The Jewish General Hospital also made the top 250 but dropped from 130 in 2025 to 133, and the CHUM (Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal) dropped from 92 to 158. Those three hospitals have made the list every year since 2022. Of the nearly 216,000 hospitals, the magazine annually ranks the top 250 hospitals from 32 countries chosen based on population size, life expectancy, standard of living, hospital density and available reliable data. Ten Canadian hospitals made the list. Toronto’s hospitals received the top marks in the country with six on the list, including the no. 2 ranked one - Toronto General Hospital. Hospitals are ranked based on medical experts’ recommendations, existing patient experience data, hospital quality metrics, and Statista’s Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Implementation Survey. Despite the high score, Opatrny is well aware that the General needs some care. “So definitely imaging. There’s also an angio for trauma use that we need to upgrade, and then there’s been a lot of leaks, so there’s a lot of piping that needs to be repaired,” she said. However, she said an enhanced recovery after surgery unit, a super centre that matches surgical robotics with AI and other new projects, continues to keep the General at the forefront of medicine and innovation.
